How to back up a WHM/cPanel file to RackSpace Cloud File Service

If you have a dedicated server or VPS, you could back up your WHM/cPanel sites or other files to Rackspace Cloud Files service from any web server data center.

These are the steps I did to send a file from my server with StormOnDemand.com to Rackspace Cloud files service.

1. Generate a backup file with WHM/cPanel control panel or simply gather a folder with files you wish to back up to Rackspace Cloud.

2. Open an account with Rackspace, http://www.rackspacecloud.com/signup

3. Download and install the ruby script written by Jon Stacey, http://github.com/jmstacey/cfbackup. Follow the installation instructions that Jon provided. You might need the latest ruby. Download and installation instructions here.

4. Edit the configuration file, cfbackup.yml found in the working directory with your account name information  (include rackspace API) and copy it to /etc/cfbackup.yml

5. Locate the path of the folder  and file you wish to back up. In my example below, I only backed up one file.  See Jon’s website for other examples.

6. The command line is as follows:

cfbackup –action push -v –local_path /home/YOUR_USER_BACKUP_FOLDER/backup-file.tar.gz –container cpanel
